2000 - Eddy Arnold received a National Medal of Arts from President Clinton in Washington, D.C.

1999 - The first Canadian country star, Hank Snow, died at age 85.

1997 - Garth Brooks went to number one with "Longneck Bottle," which featured Steve Wariner.

1983 - Johnny Cash checked into the Betty Ford Center to prevent an addition to pain killers he'd gotten during a recent hospital stay. Elizabeth Taylor was also in treatment at the time.

1957 - Elvis Presley got his draft notice for the U.S. Army.
